Ho there,

I am currently trying to run Seti (Boinc - NOT classical SETI) ona quite old hardware. (Pentium I 166 Mhz, 64 MB RAM). I get a message that my computer does not have enough memory. Is there a minimum Hardware configuration? Or have I just misconfigured the RAM and Disk-parameters on the homepage?

Kind regards,

There is a 64 meg of ram minimum requirement. This unfortunately takes into account the ram used by the OS. I'm not sure if all projects have this requirement. The strange thing is though that I've heard of people with 64 meg getting it to run (or, think I've heard of it). Maybe someone else can chime in and inform both of us.

You might recheck your "general preferences" setting as the wording can be tricky.

Since you have a PI 166 you might wanna be aware that you probably shouldn't participate this machine on more than one project as it's likely you'll run past the deadlines. You should set your "Connect to server atleast every" setting pretty low like ".5 days". This will help you not get more WUs than you can crunch in the deadline.

welcome to Boinc

You need a minimum of 64mb of ram for Boinc plus whatever your operating system and other programs you have running need.

Also, there is a thread about 12 or so threads down from this one called "So, What's your slowest machine???". You might wanna read this as you might just have beat everyone for the slowest machine. congratulations and good luck

hope this helps

My slowest computer is a 300 Mhz, nominally with 64MB of RAM, but Windows reports it as 56MB, as it grabs that missing 8MB to run video. Perhaps you have a similar situation?

I just bought two 32MB sticks off Ebay to dump in there, that being the max the board will support, so I'll be able to wean that one off SETI Classic and bring it to the BOINC fold too. It's slow, but it fills its function - getting online while I'm doing stuff downstairs without having to come up to my home office. 8-) I'm also waiting for LHC to open up, as I understand it has lower memory requirements than the other current projects.

Hope this helps!
