I have recently got my hands on a 2.2GHz P4M laptop which replaces my 3.5yr old 600MHz celeron laptop :) . I have to hand the old laptop back :( . It was a good laptop and I will miss it :.( But I digress. I wanted to handback the laptop without it having any outstanding wu's on it, so I changed all my preferences to a cache of between 0 days and 0 days, but it would still download a wu! Is there a way to get it to not download a wu when it uploads completed results? On dettaching from the project after uploading results what happens with the previously returned wu's that may not have been updated as the computer has not contacted the server again? Hope this makes sense. Turn your disk space settings down to such a small amount that it doesn't have any room allowed, then it will report that work was available but you don't have enough room - and it won't download anything. > On dettaching from the project after uploading results what happens with the > previously returned wu's that may not have been updated as the computer has > not contacted the server again? They should all be reported when it makes that attempt above as long as you let it go long enough to make 1 request after the last work unit is done. You can also do a manual update just after the last work unit to get them reported. Or lastly, as long as they were uploaded they will be retrieved about 1 day before they would expire (if you've never reported them, it will specifically ask the server if it happens to be there just before it reissues it). |

The question makes perfect sense. I will handle the second part first. When you detach, any WUs that you have on your hard disk will not be crunched further, and if they are finished and not reported, the credit request will never be made. Do an update first if you have any WUs on your HD. The ones that have not been crunched to compeltion will eventually expire and be handed out to other hosts. They expire at the deadline. Now for the first part. Choose a profile that you are not using (I am going to hope at this point that you are not a working student with computers at all three places). Set the disk usage space for that profile to be too small for BOINC to download any S@H WUs (.001 GB ought to do). Wait for the completion, update, and disconnect. Now for the question that you did not ask, but will eventually. No you cannot get rid of the old computer out of your profile. It has downloaded at least one WU, and therefore cannot be deleted. |

Thanks guys. I'm sure the question of changing your preferences to ensure you get no wu's will be a common one over the coming months and years with all the new users about to come on line. I know this question has been asked before. It seems ridiculous that there is no option for this or Berkeley expect people to throw away wu's in this style of situation. Having to play with your preferences like this not a good way of handling it. I don't want to remove the host as it has good bragging rights of having a low host ID number. I am not certain that it is on the schedule, but the developers liked the idea. > > [/url] |
