VERN > Theres a CLI BOINC in the install directory "C:\Program Files\BOINC" this is the Command Line Only Client. I dont really use it but I think it runs in a Dos window (xp fake dos window), not sure if it offers better performance over the Windowed BOINC.
AMD XP3200+ MY SITE! |

VERN > BOINC (v.25 at least) installs fine on XP. As part of the install, you get the option to run BOINC when (a) the User who installed it is logged-on, (b) When any user logs-on, or (c) as a service to run whenever the OS is running, even if no user is logged-in. The actual BOINC executable and the project executables have no user interface (at least in the GUI sense). BOINC.EXE which controls the scheduling of projects and communication with the Project host, is controlled by BOINCMGR, which provides the user interface. Project executables e.g. setiathome_4.09_windows_intelx86.exe can display graphics on request - except when it's running as a service. Put another way, unless you invoke the graphics, BOINC and the projects it runs have just about zero GUI overhead. |

I run the BOINC CLI in WinXP. It runs in a DOSbox, instead of the system tray, though. I run the dosbox, because I think it looks better than the 4.25 GUI. what you need to do to change your computer to start up with the DOSbox instead of the GUI, you need to first install a single-user installation, then change the path for your GUI from "**/BOINC/boincmgr.exe" to "**/BOINC/boinc.exe" (replacing the ** with the path to your BOINC directory, of course.) And yes, it's true; there is no visible performance gain from running the CLI instead of the GUI. The only change is a purely aesthetic one. BOINC Wiki Gideontech BOINC team! |
