I read in other threads about BURP@home, but the website I googled says it's not on Boinc. What am I missing?

Depends. What site did you google? This site definitely shows it as going towards BOINC, though in alpha status right now.

Well, first of all, the website you want to look at is this one:

http://burp.boinc.dk

Second, it is, at the moment, slow going. I've been a member for a while, but have yet to receive any work from them. They describe themselves as being in a pre-alpha stage. Their aim is to use BOINC to do the rendering of computer animations, which animators will be able to send to the project for crunching.

Not very scientific, but, cool enough to join. And, we get to see the final results. They have a few of their high-end outputs available for viewing on the site.

Thanks for the information. I'd rather give my resources to science so I don't think I'll join this one. Interesting though.

MattDavis: Ahh, I see why you didn't get to the right place by googling ;) First of all, the project is just called BURP - there's no @home in it ;) Secondly they're still at a very early stage. The crunching app seems to have a couple of issues - not yet multiproject compatible in the BOINC sence. Alot of things still need to get in place, and it'll be a while before even more test work will be available. But slowly and gradually they'll get there ;)

And no, it's not a science project :) But still it's pretty cool to see someones thinking about using BOINC for something besides science, and thereby exposing the potential of BOINC as an agile backbone for DC ;) AND what DC can ALSO be ;)

Hmm. I think mentioning that I'm not trying to convince you to join the project would be in order :)

Just off the top of my head, it can/could be a science tool ...

Take Predictor@Home, might they not in the future want to see the actual folding, live, and in color?

BURP aims to develop a publicly distributed system for rendering 3D animations.
Currently this is a pre-alpha project which means that you cannot yet upload your own animation for rendering. Periodically we are doing testanimations - sometimes you will not be able to contact the schedulers.

I am Attached but no work yet, but ready to go when it goes online.

As already stated in this thread BURP isn't anywhere near being a production-level project. Please do not join unless you really think you know what you are doing (and you don't care that your computer will suddenly blow up in a cloud of dust).

Ahh - that's good thinking ;) Interproject projects, like AstroPulse using the SETI@home tapes ;) Non-scientific projects becoming scientific by helping out in their special fields - now we're talking DC in the big picture :)

Here's something crazy. I tried to attatch my office computer to BURP and I'm sure I put in the correct web address, but several times it connected to the Pirates server despite the fact that I entered the BURP address!
