Is there an option to change the amount of CPU usage boinc takes? Personally I don't like my computer running 24/7 with 100% of my cpu used. I'd like to cut it down to 50-60%

You could use this tool: http://threadmaster.tripod.com/

(Works for other apps as well)

Thanks, but I had a question about threadmaster.
I have it installed and such, but how do I manage the individual program (boinc) in regedit? (ie: set it to take 50% of the cpu time)

Well, you have been on the website?
Then how about reading the configuration section of the site? There also is a readme file inside the zip. You should be experienced in handling regedit though.

[edit]
You have to add the cruncher applications e. g. setiathome_4.09_windows_intelx86.exe and not the BOINC client.

There's 2 ways of going about this. You can set a single setting and limit all processes to 50% (easiest) or you can set each process with it's own limit and/or a combination of the two. It's all in the readme. Just do a control-alt-delete to bring up task manager, then select the processes tab to get the actual application names that run under the boinc manager (it's not the manager using the cpu time). The SETI application is "setiathome_4.09_windows_intelx86.exe". Use notepad to make all your settings and then merge the changes in with regedit.

Sorry, I can't give you the exact detail as don't have it installed anymore.. I bought a better fan. ;-)

ThreadMaster allows you to make sure it uses less cpu.
Direct link to the ThreadMaster page (with instructions for SETI/Boinc):

A simple way to accelerate the processing of a data unit is not to use the
screen saver way. Incidentaly, I notice that I could reduce the processing
time to complete a data unit from 18 hours to just under 5 hours by not using
the graphic interface (GUI) of the program simply by allowing the program to run
in the background and disabling the screen saver. Now, I'm crunching several
data units per day!

Interesting question!

I have a similar problem with my laptop overheating in summer.

Does anyone know of a similar program for Linux or can anyone think of a way to achieve the same thing on Linux?

Hmm, now if I could tap into the power in there, the wireless connection might still work. But how do I keep the laptop from smelling like onions?

Get a Linksys USB connection, it is powered by the USB port and has a cable that will allow you to park it outside the fridge ... now all you have to be concerned with is powering the computer... of course with a laptop you can just run it off batteries, changing battery packs every 3 hours or so ...

Well my grandma used to tell me that a slice of bread impaled on the knife you were cutting the onions with stopped one crying, so I guess some variation on that theme.... ;)

Oh and PLEASE take care. I actually know of another message board where one user reported spilling a little water in their laptop and another suggested 40 minutes at 150C in the oven.... the intended joviality was missed and... Yes the recipient of the advice actually did put the lappy in the oven - Total write-off. Incredible but true.

I am a bit concerned with the new BOINC screensaver using CPU time to twist the images on the screen. I would prefer to use that time to analyze.

So, don't use the screensaver.

Especially if your laptop is in the fridge.
