The Planetary Society, the late Dr. Carl Sagan's organization promoting space exploration, provided the initial funding that enabled SETI@home to become a reality. We continue to provide a significant portion of the funds that keep SETI@home alive. What better reason could you want for joining a team?

Please visit our team page -- we'd love to have you aboard! And while you're there, consider becoming a member of The Planetary Society, thereby helping to support SETI financially as well.

Several team members have asked me whether anything can be done about the difficult-to-navigate, non-hierarchical format of Berkeley's official BOINC team stats pages. Well, now something has been done.

Our official team page now includes a link to our hierarchical listing at the SETI@work site. Check it out -- you'll like it! On your line you'll find a yellow target. Click the yellow target to show the differences between you and the other team members, complete with projected days to catch up based on your recent crunch rate.

Hello Clay Ruth,

This is the first time I have seen you post on the BOINC message board. It's good to see that you have started running SETI over here now. I look forward to reading your post.

Clay,

Nice stats page. I had missed these kinds of stats since joining The Planetary Society team.

Thanks,
Mike

Thank you, all, for your comments. I haven't really fired up seriously in BOINC yet; just dabbled with it a bit. There will be plenty of time for BOINCing after Classic shuts down. My strategy is to maximize my final Classic total for the last snapshot and then to enjoy climbing the BOINC ranks as I did in Classic. I just hit 85K Classic results yesterday and have my sights set on 90K by shutdown time, with 100K out of sight unless Classic manages to drag on until mid-July.

Presently I have BOINC set up on just one old P-II/300 that hasn't been able to get any work since they upped the minimum memory to "64 MB." It's a 64 MB box, but Windows can see only 63.4 MB of it, so BOINC refuses to accept any new work. It seems to me that they could trim that requirement just a bit so that the old 64 MB boxes can still be useful. I've ranted about that on these boards before, but the level of activity here quickly buries my comments to where no one notices them any more.

Greetings Mr. Ruth. I just download Bionic over the weekend while the system at Berkeley was down. It finely started monday and all is well.. I thought i would join a team and yours stood out. I joined yours this week and
would like to say hello to all on the team.. I have a small network go'in and plan to have 1 more of mine go'in soon and a few friends join'in in soon too.
I am 43 with a 8th grade edu and a IQ of 128. Space exploration has been my passion. I beleive there is life out there and that some day it will be reveiled or we as explore's will find it though programs like Seti@home or by luck. thanks to people like you we will some day know for sure.
thanks to all who help out.....

Hello;

If I switch to being a member of the Planetary Society will all of my years of Classic and Boinc Seti credits be switched or only from the point on that I join?

your points don't transfer to the new team but you won't have them removed from your personal total either

98SE XP2500+ @ 2.1 GHz Boinc v5.8.8

And God said"Let there be light."But then the program crashed because he was trying to access the 'light' property of a NULL universe pointer.

And here all these years i've been doing the solo act, when i could have been crunching for the Planetary Society! This has been rectified however, as i'm now doing BOINC Einstein, Climate Prediction, and SETI... ALL for the TPS. It's kinda fun being part of a team, not sure why i waited so long.

I'm not sure how it works here on the BOINC side, but in Classic all of your credits move with you. The team you leave loses them; the team you join gains them.

Joining a team in BOINC doesn't change your Classic team affiliation; you would have to switch teams on the Classic side separately if you so desire.

It's different for the BOINC projects. You don't bring your points to the total of your new team. The new team only gets and Keeps the points you earn while a member of the team. At no time does it affect your personal totals adversely.

Thanks for the clarification. I had expected it to work that way on Classic when I first joined, and I was surprised to find that it didn't. There's another example of how BOINC has improved upon Classic's design.

If i could just ask everyone on The Planetary Society team a favor...

Could you please stop crunching units for a while so i can advance up the ladder a little bit?? LoL. Thanks much, i greatly appreciate your support! Just kidding of course, but it seems like the more i crunch, the lower in position i fall. I feel like the little engine that couldn't! That's what i get for missing staff meetings i guess. ;)

LOL - Digger, you just need to scrape up an extra machine or two. Even an old computer can help out, as long as it has more than 64 MB. I managed to come up with another stick to put in the old 300 MHz box, and now it's BOINCing again.

Clay,

Interesting that you mention it, as i have my recently retired K6-2 box sitting on my living room floor even as we speak. The thing has just been such an incredible workhorse for me for six years, it almost brought a tear to my eye to replace it.

It seems fitting that it should live out it's retirement working for SETI... i just don't know how well it would do with BOINC since it took over 30 hours just to produce a Classic WU! LoL. There's also the electric bill to consider, since i have a hard enough time keeping the lights on as it is (impoverished student here), though i suppose i could put it in my grad office at school where it could crunch away 24/7 and even have a high-speed internet connection.

Assuming i can even figure out how to coordinate running 2 machines at once under the same account, how well do you think this machine will do with BOINC? What kind of numbers are you getting out of your 300Mhz?

K6-2 450MHZ
512 L2 Cache
256 MB RAM

Thanks much,

Might I inject a thought here? You sign up the second machine exactly the way you did the first one. Download the core client 4.19 or 4.25. attach to project using the Key and URL that they emailed you. that's it. done.

I have a PIII 500 and it'll crunch any WU (except maybe CPDN). The problem I ran into is the report deadline(Einstein) when running multiple projects. If you ran only one it should work (maybe even PPAH and Seti).

Hope this helps

tony

Tony,

Thanks for your input... greatly appreciated my friend!

I've been with SETI Classic since 1999, but am a newbie to BOINC so i'm still trying to figure this all out. From what you said, it sounds like i just set up the second machine with the same activation key, and all of the units crunched by either machine will go to the same account (and the TPS team). That's good information to know, since i'm a blathering idiot when it comes to networking and i didn't EVEN want to go there if i could avoid it. Perhaps this is yet another strong point to BOINC, as it can manage multiple computers so well. :)

Do you folks think my old K6-2 can crunch enough BOINC units to make it worthwhile for the team?

Thanks again,

Dig

Isn't it weird how some boxes feel like that? I built a P-166 machine in 1995 when I was in the military, at a time when the fastest was a 200. I used that machine six years, of which two years were in college (1998-2000). I upgraded the graphics card four times, if you include the Voodoo-I add-on. It had originally contained my first CD-ROM, a 3X SCSI (with cartridge!) on a Soundblaster 16 I bought for a previous machine. I added my first DVD-ROM to it, along with an MPEG decoding card (yes, the video card passed through TWO other cards at that point). Through this and many other mods (its final config had NO slots left!), the machine lasted until 2001. It was semi-retired to a child's room then to run educational software, and lasted another year there.

I like my current 2.8GHz hyperthreading, digitizing, DVD-cutting monster, but I sometimes miss that old machine.

[EDIT] Oops, forgot to mention, the P-166 was the first machine I crunched SETI Classic on! :) [/EDIT]
