For years I've run SETI on my old iMac g3 SE DV graphite- 400mhz w/768mb but small HD of 12g (2.5g available) using OS 9.2.2. Now, I've upgraded to Panther 10.3.8 and would like to continue running SETI. Must I stay with old single SETI function or can I move to the multifaceted BOINC, which you all seem to use now? If yes, what do I do to initiate this transition and implement it? Keep in mind that I am using the iMac for simple tasks: email, research, writing, music downloads; no heavy Graphics programs, not making videos, not storing slide collection, not using garage band, etc. nor using anything Microsoft. Safari and Firefox. are Browsers of choice. The iMac does stay on, all the time. Thanks to all you experts. Cali |

I do not have an answer but an statement: I don't like the Boinc software for the Mac. Why? It lost the whole screen saver idea, Seti/Boinc is'nt an screen saver anymore for the Mac. If they don't fix this soon, and they are switching to Boinc and dropping the support for Seti/Classic. Then I see no other choice then to quit my Seti work (after all these years)... |

I agree with Paul. i didn't found a SIMPLE way to operate boinc, i've followed many advices, read many posts and now i just have a crashing app after 3 hours of tweaking through darwin... i must say this isn't user friendly at all. Especially after all the buzz that has been made around seti@home project that was asking people to contribute. I've been a long time OS9 seti user but now i can't participate anymore unless they provide "not aware of kernel's secret" users such as me with a comprehensive piece of software (there isn't even an installer, come on...). Seti managers should definitely think over their communication with the community that is made not only of programmer. |

download boinc for the Mac save it in a new folder in the Applications directory open up a terminal window then enter cd /Applications/BOINC ; ./boinc_4.19_powerpc-apple-darwin -return_results_immediately -update_prefs http://setiathome.berkeley.edu you'll have to do this each time you restart the Mac unless you automate it, not sure how familiar you are with unix it might be easier for you to save the command in a text edit file and copy and paste it into the terminal window anyway it'll run non intrusively while you do your work |

I have tried the BOINC client and cant even get it running on an eMac with OSX 10.2.8 I have an idea it can't run on this version so they will lose my support when they switch off Classic # |

not working; permission problems. I'm not familiar at all with unix. Thank you for your kind help but i'm really upset against seti. These guys are so smart creating software like this... i think the least they could do is provide an installer and GUI. well i'm done with it. |
