I´m having great fun looking at all the curves and craphics - but I do like the old Setihome screensaver a lot better than the new one. Is it possible to use the old one when I´m running the Boinc client? Regards Henrik |

Have you tried to customise it in the project preferences? Or do you demand even more? Gruesse vom Saenger For questions about Boinc look in the BOINC-Wiki |

I just like the "old" Setihome screensaver a lot better. Kind regards Henrik |

BOINC is a great leap forward and I would not go back for the world, but I liked the old screen saver better as well. If you customize too much then it slows down to a ridiculous pace. If you use minimize or many of the settings then there are blank black areas which hide the graph. I too don't see the technical reasons for not offering an option to do it the old way. We could even make a joke or form a group about it. "If it was good enough for the 20th century then, by golly, its still good enough!" "IF God had met SETI distributed computing to have more than one choice of graphics, he would have so specified." |

i haven't seen the classic screensaver in 5 years. i always look at the graphics at pirates, but that is what is being worked on now, graphics only. am i the only one that thinks they shouldn't even worry about a screensaver? maybe something else to be offloaded to us users? *just have to play devil's advocate* S@h Berkeley's Staff Friends Club |

Ok peoples, you're missing the point, the screensaver is no longer the seti screensaver. It is the Boinc screensaver which gets its paremeters from the running science app. If the app can display graphics, then those graphics are passed to the screensaver. If not, then you get the floating box saying which science app is running and its percentage complete. |

If I remember correctly, the old screensaver used 2D constructs where as the new screensaver uses the OpenGL 3D constructs. OpenGL acceleration is supported on a number of different platforms, and so other projects could easily write graphics routines that would be portable across those platforms as well. Not every platform supports 2D acceleration and so the CPU of the machine would be used for processing graphics. All in all, OpenGL 3D graphics was the best choice to make when the update to the client was being made, supporting the old graphics would probably have doubled the client development time. ----- Rom BOINC Development Team, U.C.
