hi, I'm getting random crashes on my system when boinc is using both processors, I've not run into it on any other application (however nothing has stressed my resources quite as well as boinc either)I've run memory tests, and cpu tests and come up with nothing wrong, Does anyone have any ideas?

when I crash it's not a blue screan or anything, I get a completely non responcive desktop, keyboard and mouse lock up, the desktop displays, but seems locked as well (no progress on anything incluing the clock in the corner.)

Any clues?

(btw os is win2k) never had thsi problem with redhat, but had to go to windows for compatability for other programs)

lockups are happening anywhere from instantly apon boinc starting up, or even hours into processing.

Run a motherboard monitoring programme, log the CPU temperatures & the power supply rails- most notabley +12V, +5V & +3.3V.
Such problems are indicative of CPU overheating or a flakey power supply; although usually a flakey power supply will cause BSODs or random reboots.

Worth removing the cover off of the system. If that cures it then it's highly likely it's an over heating problem- possibly the second CPU that isn't used most of the time?.

Try increasing the size of your virtual memory. Control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance Options --> Check the selected size. You could try to let Windows determen the size itself.

Also disable the automatic reboot on system crash: Control Panel > System > Advanced > Startup and Recovery --> Uncheck 'Automatic Reboot'. If your PC crashed, it now should display a blue screen.

Be sure to have the latest BIOS: P2B-DS BIOS 1013. It's located here: http://www.asus.com/support/download/item.aspx?ModelName=P2B-DS&Type=Latest. (Sorry, don't know how to make links)

Update all drivers (and windows!) if you haven't done that already.

Reïnstall BOINC, maybe something went wrong.

Check for adware and spyware, use Spybot or Adaware or something like that. Check for virusses and trojans too.

hi, thanks for the suggestions, I think I may have tracked it down.
I've been running several monitoring programs, (plus all the antivirus/spyware)and I've got the latest bios, the problem turned out to be one of those
id 10 t errors. somehow the heat sink on my second cpu came loose.... so under load it was shutting down (honestly I don't know how it was running period)

Thanks again
