I am a pretty tech savy guy... hell I teach this stuff but I am confused as to how this BOINC thing works. I have three computers I used to run S@H on. It was easy; download, install, put in you email address and go. Now I have no idea how this thing works. On system, my primary computer seems to be processing info, but I am not reallt sure. Another system is saying that "another instance of BOINC is running." What?! And I haven't even tried the third system. Not to mention, my computer did 56% in less than twenty minutes (while I was using it) and now hasn't even moved a single percent in the past thiry minutes. My second computer isn't even connecting to Seti via the project manager. Can someone please clear this thing up for me? I've been searching the website for answers but none can be found. How does Seti@home work for the everyday person now? I just wanted to help out my ET friends find Earth and now I don't think they can figure this thing out. Maybe I'm over reacting, but I want something easy to use. And all my credits! Not just the ones as of May of 2004. My systems are five times more powerful than the old system. I have put in hundreds of cycles since May of 2004. What's going one here?

Hello and welcome!

Your credits for Classic (or better WU-count) will be updated, once Classic is history. As this is supposed to be in the nearer future, don't expect another intermediate.

Installation and connection to the projects usually goes this way:
- DL and install Boinc
- Attach to chosen project(s) with the data from the mail(s)
- Sit back and relax

As I never did Seti the classic way, I can't tell you the difference in the handling, but for me as a newbie (5 month ago) boinc was as easy as every average windoze program.

To the general concept:
Boinc is the central program, that manages the different science applications running on your puter. If you just run Seti, it's only task is to fill your cache and send your crunched WUs back. If you run other projects as well, it distributes the CPU-usage according to your preferences as well. For me it's 4 projects ATM.

BTW:
A good manual for Boinc is Paul D. Bucks BOINC Powered Projects Documentation and his FAQ therein.

Your second computer that has the BOINC already running message has one of two problems. One is that you are trying to start a second copy of BOINC when one is already running. The other is that the user running BOINC does not have write priveledges to the BOINC directory.

The S@H project does not have a very smooth progression in the % complete. It is a little bit better than it was several months ago (60% in the first 10 min, 5 hours for the rest...).

Are you trying to connect the manager on one computer to the daemon on another? If so, on the computer to be controlled, you need to create a remote_hosts.cfg file that contains the name or IP address of every allowed controlling computer one per line.

Your credits will be updated sometime after the classic project is shut down permanently. The easy ones are where the S@H migration account was activated in BOINC (I believe that this is your situation). The next hardest are those where this could not happen for some reason but the emails are kept the same. The case that probably will not migrate is where the emails are not kept the same and the migration account was not activated. The first of these was promissed, the second they promissed to try.
