And how about some kind of firewall that blocks your boinc_gui.exe or boinc_cli.exe?

This is not a connection problem caused by ISP or firewall I think. It sounds more like a problem with the DNS. You could check if the account_*xml files got messy somehow, the master_url line should say :

<master_url>http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/</master_url>

i think that cannot resolve Host id is when it does not recognize your Host ID for the PC. i have an old thread somewhere about my HP celeron 500 doing this practically every reboot. in that scenario, it is because the connection to seti happens faster than the PC or the HDD can handle and it creates all new work...

i am sure that you have a different issue, hopefully someone here can help you track it down.

Can't resolve host ID sounds like a dns error -- your machine tried to resolve setiboincdata.ssl.berkeley.edu and could not get an IP address to go with it, for example.

Maybe this can help?

SETI@home - 2005-03-08 07:35:44 - Requesting 666137 seconds of work
SETI@home - 2005-03-08 07:35:44 - Sending request to scheduler: http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/cgi
--- - 2005-03-08 07:35:44 - Can't resolve hostname setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu (valid name, no data record of requested type)
SETI@home - 2005-03-08 07:35:44 - scheduler init_op_project to http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/cgi failed, error -113
SETI@home - 2005-03-08 07:35:44 - init_op_project failed, error -113
SETI@home - 2005-03-08 07:35:44 - Deferring communication with project for 1 hours, 26 minutes, and 14 seconds

I have downloaded more WU though! and i did get a hostid to start with:

SETI@home - 2005-03-08 07:35:43 - Host ID is 627422

Thanks

Would a detatch, and reatach help?
Has anyone had this problem and fixed it?
I have looked on the internet at this problem, many have had it when they build a P4 machine with 2 CPU's (HT), but they haven't had a solution!

Indicates a connection problem. Modem unplugged, web site down, DNS server niot serving, or your Firewall is blocking the requests.

This is not a problem with SETI or BOINC.

It's a general problem with the DNS configuration on your machine, or possibly how you connect to the 'net.

Is this through your LAN, or on a dialup?

What OS are you running? If your running WinXP, shut off the firewall within it. If you are using a US Robotics router, you will need to put that PC in the DMZ to up/doanload WU's. Just remember to disable the DMZ after your up/doanloads.
I learned this thru personal experience.

So the mystery is: why couldn't this machine do a DNS lookup before.

Most newer versions of Windows cache DNS, so XP may very well be caching a failed lookup from earlier. That failed lookup will eventually expire.

You can try "ipconfig /flushdns" at a command prompt. I'm not sure how well that actually works....

If you can avoid that, that's what I'd recommend.

The problem is that the hosts file is static, and if the project moves for any reason, you'll have to find it and fix it yourself.

... and all of the advice you get from here will assume that you are really using DNS and not a static hosts file.

Depending on the version Boinc you are using there IS a well known problem with one (4.55 I think) where if a completed WU cant immediately be sent back, it is deleted and you get nothing for that. Went through that, myself and got 4.56 to overcome that.

Well i send back 2 wu on the new computer and thats after changeing the host file and switching to boinc 4.25, so it looks ok now, i just lost the first 8 i did while the servers were down, it may have been from a sudden shut down or something, i just hope it doesn't happen if it does you will see a post around here.
Thanks for all your help and comments!
