This post is more of a solution looking for a problem...

I noticed in the technical news that there was trouble with the data cables for the UPSs.

If these are APC Smart-UPS UPSs, as the technical news seemed to suggest, I may have a solution to the problem, having had the same problem myself.

When one type of data cable is used with these UPSs - i.e.: USB or serial - the UPS will no longer respond via the other type of cable until the UPS is reset. This may be achieved as per instructions I received from APC support:

1) Turn the UPS OFF.
2) Disconnect the USB / Serial cable.
3) Disconnect the mains power cable.
4) Hold the test button down for 5 seconds.

You should hear a click.

At this point, either type of cable should be useable until one type has been used.
