Been running since the early betas.
Can't get anything later than 4.19 to work in windows98se
I did get one of the 4.62 I think it was with the BOINCManager, but had to uninstall
that to load 4.20 and later.
I've tried every version I think since 4.19, through 4.24 and always get an install error.
Works fine on my WindowsXP Pro systems.

BOINC Installer Information

Any ideas.

First you have to uninstall any previous version before you install any 4.2x.

I usually do a full power down after the uninstall.

I expect that on first start of 4.2x, it might hang, but it runs the benchmark and that can be slow and make it look like it is hanging patience is required. If it does hang, I just alt-ctrl-del to make sure that Boinc, Boinc manager, and any project application are stopped before I try to restart the program.

Also I have to be patient on starting 4.2x, as it can sometime be slow to fully activate.

I always remove the shortcut from the Startup menu because it seems to have more difficulty starting when competing with other programs at power up.

I've used every version since 4.6x (I'm a glutton for punishment) and they have all eventually worked on my system. I still expect it to lockup from time to time after all it's not called the bleeding edge for nothing and it is W98.

I did uninstall each time and power down.
It seems to hang at the start of the install.
Message make no sense, unless it isn't dispaying everything.
This is a Compaq DeskPro P-III windows98se
has several projects split 33/33/33 percent.

After I uninstall I'll use regedit to see if there are any leftovers.
Maybe I should see if older 4.6x versions will install again.

Wierd, that error translates too:

//
// MessageId: ERROR_NOT_LOGGED_ON
//
// MessageText:
//
// The operation being requested was not performed because the user has not logged on to the network.
// The specified service does not exist.
//
#define ERROR_NOT_LOGGED_ON 1245L

I'm in the process or rewriting parts of our installer, so this problem may go away in the next release, if it was something I was doing wrong.

I forgot to say I'm usually online when I first run a new install of Boinc. I don't know if it makes a big difference. I got into the habit long ago because the Boinc default is network access enable.

Well, if I had to take a shot in the dark, it sounds as though the installer is calling an API that expects the machine to have signed into the "Windows Networking client".

That module was integrated into the NT environment by default, but isn't required for Win9x machines.

Anyway, if it is something I'm doing, I should be able to present a better error message when I'm done rewriting those modules.

I'm getting rid of the VBS installer scripts.

just a microsoft peer-to-peer network here and on the internet via cable modem and router. Send a real file server and I'll test it out :-)

No server needed, its on your PC.

What does the logon box look like when you boot Windows - is it "Enter our network password for Microsoft Network", "Type a user name and password to log on to Windows" or do you get a desktop without having to log on?

You can still get the desktop and still have the Microsoft Network enabled, by having your password be empty.

The only way to know for sure would be to check the network control panel applet.

I just go right to the desktop. I could try setting up with an id and password.
I have Client For Microsoft Networks and Microsoft Family Login installed.
