ok,

i defined my default preferences to work which is set to

Do work while computer is in use? : no
Do work only after computer is idle for : 15 minutes

if i start boinc it shows this message

SETI@home - 2004-07-09 15:30:11 - Project prefs: using separate prefs for work

but runs all the time even if i work and do heavy cpu stuff...

i'm pretty sure i had it working once that with those settings the client would supsend asap if i would use my machine...

and yes the client is set to "run based on preferences"

any ideas ?

The suspending type preferences seem to be ignored unless they are the defaults and there are no venue preferences.

It's just a glitch in the way that it's currently working.

If you set separate preferences for alternate locations, and set to suspend on use, for some reason it just doesn't work right. If you only use one set of preferences (only the default, with no separate locations specified), then the suspend feature will work.

Eventually, it will likely get fixed. It's a known bug.

Okay, I may have this wrong, so someone please correct me ...
On a windows system, it seems that the priority that Boinc Seti runs is so low, that running all the time doesn't seem to interfere with other processing. I've run Office Xp Access and Excel, Bryce, winXP updates, Frontpage 2003, PhotoImpact 8, and other software, including games, without seeing a problem. I had the same experience with Seti Classic/with Seti Driver (set at low priority).

Correct. It runs at the lowest priority level, so it will yield the cpu to anything else that asks for it.

I found one task the S@H1 interfered with, IIS. BOINC does not interfere with it. IIS stupidly sets some of its threads to an extremely low priority instead of waiting on a semaphore or mutex. When they were needed again, S@H was at a higher priority.

There is one thing that BOINC still interfers with, the windows 3D screensavers. I am starting to think they run as part of the system idle process so there may be no way to use them and any DC project at the same time.

No, this is correct. I've never experienced a slowdown by letting BOINC run constantly. I ran this way through six months of beta.

hi JAF,

well low doesn't mean nothing...

some examples...

if i use my dual xeon to compile some heavy stuff (c source code)

without boinc running takes about 28 minutes to do a clean build
with boinc running set to low of course takes about 36 minutes...

doing a render with maya 6 (pretty complex scene)

without boinc running takes about 6 1/2 minutes
with around 8 1/2 minutes

which of course is not what i want....

i rather have boinc watch my tasklist and stop if some heavy duty task starts...

I've also noticed that it seems to ignore my "Leave at least" disk space settings on separate profiles and will only follow the default value as well. I'd like to see this fixed as I'm running one machine with really low disk space and another that needs to keep huge amounts open for video editing, DVD authoring, downloading insane ammounts of crap that won't be deleted for months, etc. (Usually just downloaded crap)

BOINC is scheduled to become a 3 layer product on the client machines rather than a 2 layer product. Currently either the CLI or the GUI controls the project processes. The schedule has a task where the CLI controls the project processes, and the GUI controls the CLI. The CLI will be able to be setup so that the GUI can control it from a different machine.
