Message 79157 - Posted: 13 Feb 2005, 20:00:05 UTC

Does anyone have a link to, or knowledge of acceptable CPU temperatures for various processors?

I have two systems running side by side, and one is running very warm compared to the other.

CPU: Intel 2.0 GHz
Motherboard: Asus P4S333
CPU temp: 46c (alarm set at 60c)
Mobo temp: 41c
Fan on back of box, fan on front bay of box
air coming from front fan is room temp.

CPU: Intel 2.4 GHz (533 MHz)
Motherboard: Asus P4P800 MX
CPU temp: 61-65c jumps (alarm set at 72c)
Mobo temp: 47c
Fan on back of box, fan on front bay of box
air coming from front fan is noticably warmer than above machine.

Although the AsusProbe software says all is "ok" in the ranges for both boxes, I'm wondering why the other box is running so much warmer, and if it's reasonable compared to other 2.4 GHz CPU's

Thank for any info, insight into this...please feel free to add your thoughts.

This temperature is just about right. My P4 2.4ghz runs at 45c uner load.

This is too warm. See my previous comment. You should try re-seating the heatsink, using a larger heatsink, using a larger case (more airspace) or putting more fans in.

You will be assimilated...bunghole!

Thx for the info Paul...(btw, I see you've got great WU credits now)

Update:
On my 2.4 GHz box, I checked the back fan and it was blowing INTO the box.
Repositioned that fan to blow OUT of the box.

CPU temp dropped by roughly 4c
Mobo temp dropped by roughly 6c

CPU temp now wavers between 58-61c previously 61-65c
Mobo temp is now the same as other box at 41c previously 47c

(my fault for fan direction error, I built the boxes...)

Thanks for the info.

Yours is running at 45c and mine is 58-61.

That's quite a difference!!

Will try your suggestions.

There's a lots of talk about cpu temps. The problem is that most cases the temp is not measured from cpu, but under it. So the temp readings you have might not tell the cpu's real temperature.

In reality most cpu's are designed to work continuously at 80-95 'C. For example if you have P2.4 it should run nicely with core temp around 80'C.

Overclocking decreases the stability and thus limits the temp your cpu should be running.

With seti always on my cpu (p4-2.66@2.85) has mobo temp ~55 and cpu temp ~62.

Thanks everyone for the info.

I reseated the heatsink fan with no change in temps.

Will look into more fans.

I run an AMD64 3200+, and i start to fiddle with my fans once the temps reach 58C.
Right i'm running about 49-51 with Seti WU's. (with 4 fans, 3 in and 1 out, not including PSU fan).

Uh, did you also replace the thermal paste, or did you re-use the old stuff (= very very bad, and you should be punished for abusing your CPU)

I think thermal paste is overrated. I never use the stuff.

General rule of thumb- If it's working, then it's OK. If the system is unstable, then it's too hot.

Try it, your CPU temp should drop by as much as 5°c. Of course if you put too much on then the temp may increase by a couple of degrees.
