I've just finished re-building my HDD after a major crash Unfortunately 5 WU's were lost.

Any way to let the project know that they are trashed and will not be finished?

Just let them expire. :) (past the deadline)
The WU will then be sent out again.

Understand that - Just seems a shame that validation may be held up for result(s) that won't turn in. Wonder how many WU's get lost through this kind of thing?

None -- when they expire, they get reissued.

I think far more time out due to inattention or human error than hardware.

That seems to be the easiest way to deal with this problem.

When i look in my results list there are a number of old results still pending because they have gone past the deadline one or more times.. like this one:

http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/workunit.php?wuid=8413921

But i'm confident they will get credit someday..

I've just gone through the trauma of upgrading my machine - the best way round the problem of not allowing my old machine to 'lose' WUs was to carefully monitor the cache of WUs leading up to the big day. When I had sufficient in my cache to keep me working up to the time of changeover of machines, I simply changed my preferences to stop any more WUs being downloaded to me. This I accomplished by stating BOINC should leave at least 50GB free on my hard disk (my old hard disk was only 40GB.......). Simple!

Far more get lost by people resetting their projects...such as when improperly installing a new BOINC client, etc.

Or when they try to click on something in the windows client and slip off the edge of the selection onto detach. And since the last I checked there was no confirmation of this, the WU just dropped. That's when I stopped using the windows client. Fortunately I mostly stopped using windows then as well. :) Still I was pretty sad to see a couple weeks of climate WU wasted.

No work units are ever "lost" ...

There is just a small delay as the WU expires and a quorum of results cannot be established and is issued to another participant to create the quorum.

With SETI@Home issuing the WU 4 times with a quorum of 3, well, the fact that you did not return one makes little to no difference.

Over time they have been making the Scheduler smarter and these situations are becomming less and less common.
