Hi@all,

this morning I wrote a small BOINC tool which tells you about the newest Core Client versions so that you won't have to check the BOINC web page.
Screenshot:

Download

Perhaps it may have some use to someone... ^^

Greetings
Petrus

It will only work with Windows as it's written in Delphi

Hmm,

Minor idea for 1.1.1 version...
Check the registry for the installed boinc version..and either there..or in its directory find the currently installed boinc version # and display it.

Sounds interesting but for some reason I wasn't able to find the right key in the registry, if someone has got a clue where to find it ... would be great if you could tell me :)

Of course the version is also found in the boinc directory, but the path differs from installation to installation so the user would have to put in the path. I think this would not be good for a little tool.

I could do a reg search I suppose...

But I know when I compile boinc and run the executable from the compiled '/release' directory it finds the WUs and everything so it must be in the reg somewhere.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER .slash. Software .slash. BOINC

There appears to be a 'clientdir' key and 'clientpath' keys inside of that.

so do you talk about the 4.19 client? cause I don't find these keys in my registry (run boinc 4.21)

I'm using 4.19 right now...so this could be. I just used "regedit" and did a search for the word "boinc".

I may be totally wrong here but, as I understand it, Boinc doesn't write to the registry. However, if you install it as a service, Windows will record it in the registry.

Be lucky

"HKCU\Software\BOINC\ClientDir" points to where "client_state.xml" can be found. It holds the installed version, look for "platform_name", "core_client_major_version" and "core_client_minor_version", all inside the "client_state" container.

If installed as a service, there will also be a service registration in "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\BOINC". No version info there, though.

Yes thats true, but only up to v4.19. With more and more people switching to the new branch and especially when it will be the next stable release, I think it wouldn't be that good to use these keys...

I would suggest waiting for the official 4.2 release and then using the gui rpc feature to get the version. No registry, no slow file handling, only contacting localhost:1043. Every reply from the client contains the version number.
And later, you can easily put a button on your form "Check the network for out-dated boinc clients" ...

I forgot, the app path (v < 4.20) is also available in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\boinc_gui.exe.

But as Petrus and Sebastian have mentioned, there are better ways.

You may wish to link to the optimized athlon clients for Linux, so perhaps add a link or checking this page:

Thanks!

Just tried the new version. Thanks for adding the right click. Unfortunately it only copies the link to the stable copy (v 4.19 windows)and not the unstable versions.
