I have checked under my account and didn't find anything with that term. Please excuse my ignorance, but I am over 60 and still learning about computers, mainly with my daughters help, but I want to surprise her by joining her SETI team without her help. Thank you :D |

Hello Janet, Are you posting with your daughters computer? If not, the account key is called 'account ID' in the mail with the data. If so, you first have create an account here. A good manual for Boinc is Paul D. Bucks BOINC Powered Projects Documentation and his FAQ therein. And a quick installation guide for Windows therein is this and this and this. OK,first things first... No, I am not using her computer per-se. she gave me her old one when she got a newer one. I have already created an account and remembered to save that e-mail you spoke of so I had the URL and Key, but now I need to know how to get a unit or two. And IF possible how to get one of those caching things so I don't have to logon all the time. Thanks for being so helpful to me > |

> OK,first things first... OK ;) 1. Install Boinc. Look here for a step by step instruction. I can't do it better then Paul ;) Boinc should start immediatly with the first download of the Seti program application and a workunit (WU). It will crunch this without network access. 2. If you want, you can vary your stack of WUs (also refered to as Cache) in your General Preferences. There is a value called 'Connect to network about every ___Days (determines size of work cache; maximum 10 days)'. I think the default value is 0.1 days. You have to decide how often you want to connect. But don't be greedy ;) They have a deadline of 14 days, and if you do not send them back (or better: do not let Boinc send them back), you won't get credits. 3. If you know your daughters team name, you can join it. Only Credits granted while you are on the team will help the team. edit: As I live in UTC+1h timezone, I'll leave you alone for the night. I think Paul's manual will help you a lot. If not, I'll be back sometime tomorrow (probably) Happy crunching! /edit Gruesse vom Saenger For questions about Boinc look in the BOINC-Wiki |

Either Berkeley is offline (I don't think it was, but I am not quite certain), or you may have a firewall/router/proxy that is not configured to let BOINC through. To diagnose this, we will need a bit more information about how you connect to the internet. Is it dialup? Is it directly to a DSL or Cable modem? Is it through a LAN to a dialup modem? Is it through a LAN to a DSL or Cable modem? Do you have a personal firewall (zone alarm or such)? BOINC WIKI |
