Hello Cliff,

here's the short version:
First: exit Boinc, copy the directory anywhere else (just for sure, didn't need it myself afterwards).
Second: install the new version.
Third: run Boinc again.
Fourth: nothing, sit back and relax:)

btw:
the current newest version is Version 4.19 (released 25 Jan 2005).
Or, if you like to take more risks, you can try the Version 4.62 Development versions (latest features, possibly buggy)

I think he might mean Seti version 4.08, not Boinc.

There are 2 programs, Cliff: The Boinc program and the Seti crunching program. The Seti prgrams update automatically when needed. 4.08 is the current version.

The Boinc programs need to be updated manually.

You're right, I simply forgot, because it's automatic, and I don't look there that often.
I think it would be better to have another number system there, but CPDN (4.04) and P@H (4.22) have the same....there seems to be a pattern...never mind...THX for clarification, Matt!

Cliff,

You have to keep in mind that there are really 3 programs running when you are using the BOINC SOftware. The BOINC Manager which is the GUI part you see. A BOINC Daemon that "hides" in the background and controls the Science Applications. The BOINC Manager and BOINC Daemon right now are released in a set, and you can get the current version number off the the Help Menu.

The Science Applications are the programs that the project uses to process the work units. The project may have more than one Science Application and it is possible that you may have several versions of the Science Application on your system at one time. If the project updates the Science Application they may not tell the BOINC Manager to update all of the Work Units to use the latest Science Application as the difference is not that great. The version number of the Sceince application for EACH work unit is listed in the Work Tab of the BOINC Manager.

All this and more is explained in the BOINC Owner's Manual ...

Errm....Paul, that simply isn't the case, right now. Future versions (the ones currently in alpha testing) work like that but not the current release version.

In the current release, you choose which you want to run (in Windows) - the CLI version or the GUI version. Other operating systems have only the CLI version.

It depends, exactly which version 4.08 are you talking about? The one in the WOrk Tab? If so, you are fine ...

If it is 4.08 in the Help menu, then no ... you should upgrade to the latest ...

That depends:

Current version of Seti (the program that is running 'inside' Boinc): 4.08
If you're talking about that, you're fine.
If you don't know where to look:
It's in the 'Application' column in the 'Work' tab. The long name is setiathome 4.08.

The current version of Boinc (the program/s that coordinates the applications, the GUI/CLI): 4.19
As I started with 4.13 here, I do not even know whether there ever was a version 4.08 of the GUI/CLI.

I think it's the first case, so no problems;-)

Looking to your latest results, you have the 4.08 as application and 4.13 as the Boinc CC.

That should be OK. If you want, you can download the latest CC of Boinc which is 4.19.

To install this version, best is to close the CC and after that install the new one over the old one.

The Science Applications are automatically updated as needed.

Only the BOINC Manager needs manual intervention. Also, stay clear of the development versions if you are new to the systems here. The version that has a number higher than 4.5 is development only ...

Heck, I have lots of experience and I stay away from them for the most part...

Why not give the science applications a two letter designation like "se4.08 for Seti, cpx.xx for Climate Prediction, etc? The Boinc application could simply be b4.19 (no, not bo4.19!) Seems that would make life easier all around and we would get used to referring to se4.08 or b4.19.
