Was just watching the ABC evening News...

They showed a Marine Band plaything the theme song from "Monty Python's Flying Circus"...

No joke!

Well, that's very appropriate.

Monty Python took the music from an old patriotic march. So the music was indeed appropriate, but not for the reason you imply.

Lends new meaning to pomp and circumstance... no?

What I found interesting was in the speech....

“Freedom, by its nature, must be chosen...America will not impose our own style of government on the unwilling.”

(2) He didn't swear - not a single profanity. I want my money back!

I believe Monty Python took their theme tune from Souza (dunno if I've spelt him right) - indeed he did a lot of american march tunes I think.

Hate to say it but there may have been a video editor at ABC that included it for the reason implied!

A few notes into it, my reaction was "Monty Pythion" and not a "old patriotic march", and I know I was not alone! Same if the band played the first few notes of Hawaii 5-0 or Gunsmoke!

Especially when part of the VP swearing in included "But I'm not dead Yet" and when the anchor previewed the coming parties showing Bush in a Tux, the Anchor stated "There's a Penguin on the Tele!" :)

I have a great recording of the piece by the Morman Tabernacle Choir (yes, there are words) on a CD of patriotic songs, so I don't think that that organization did it as an homage to Monty Python. But if ABC meant it that way, that is sad.

Maybe they were Python fans too! (The Mormons aren't THAT dull!) :)

Did they do the theme from Gunsmoke too?

No, but the words to the Liberty Bell March are very corny. Yet, I have the feeling the song was treated seriously.

When I went on the road with LBJ in '66 as an army bandsman on his New England tour
We never played presidential honors, ruffles & florishes, or Hail to the Chief-
When The Prez got off the plane we played 'Hello Dolly' til he was off the tarmac
That was his favorite tune...cc

During the inaugural speech, right as Bush is expounding on freedom and rights, the camera panned to some guards pulling down some demonstrator's signs.

Now is that an indictment of a network of some kind, or a very real contrast that deserves airing as much as the pomp?

At the 2001 party the new prez had his limo egged and so at this one demonstrators were not allowed anywhere near him.
Those with placards were in violation of homeland security directives and should not have been anywhere in sight.
Hopefully they're now cooling down in a lockup somewhere awaiting arraignment...cc

That's democracy neo-con style.
You dissent? You even dare to show dissent? Go to the gulag, sorry, lockup.

There is a difference between dissent and intentially trying to interupt a political event, just like there is a difference between voicing your opinion and blocking public streets with picket signs and protestors.

You want my opinion, they tried to incite a riot at a public event. That's borderline endangering the life of our President....unless you are under the impression they were Bush supporters until that moment, and NOT there for the sole purpose of causing a disruption.......but I don't think anyone here is that stupid.

Point Blank, they intentionally went to his job for the sole purpose of causing a disruption......that's harrassment, and considered illegal by all RATIONAL thinking Americans. Just like if I walked into your place of business specifically with the intention of giving you a hard time on the job.

They just still don't realize that Republicans are better than that. You don't recall these type of actions when billybob was President, not because we thought he wasn't a piece of crap who was more concerned with his ding-a-ling than foreign policy, but because he was our President regardless of personal opinions.

I happened to be at event where I met President Clinton and believe me the protesters were thier, in force. Also if the republicans are "better" why did they constantly attack Clinton for his behaivior as a young man. Then when simular things were found out about w said we can't hold his youthful mistakes against him?

I wasn't aware that all the pro-lifers that quite successfully disrupted the 97 Inauguration proceedings were Democrats.

Amazing what you can learn on these boards...

Americans are allowed to protest as much as they want
Special areas a safe distance away from government officials will be provided
Security is very important so these special areas will be equipped with special security measures
Dissent is an important facet of the rights of the citizenry so dissenters must be protected
The government needs to keep tabs on these special folks so their right to dissent is well preserved
Should protesters cross the line and be deemed enemy combatants,
Homeland Security certainly can make room for them
In their ever expanding facilities in the Caribe-
Without all the bother of due process or smartass lawyers
Where they can be kept safe for as long as they survive

Maybe it's extreme for me to believe Gitmo is for people the US doesn't want running around loose
But soon, when the next evil nation must be shown the way-
Attendance there may include those who have particularly irritating voices
Just how much hollering is one allowed before being classified a menace?
