i was wondering if there was a faster version of the new Boinc. I just think my lowly laptop can crunch faster than what it's doing.

Hey again, There are "optimized" clients available for certain Operating Systems. Which OS are you using?

I'm not aware of any "optimized" client for Windows.

There is a man named Paul Buck who has established a website to assist new people (or us old ones who need help). He's upgrading his site every day.
I recommend you look through his stuff here

Since you're running boinc/seti on a laptop I also recommend you read this threadDoes Boinc harm a laptop

Toshiba 1405 S171
I've been abusing it with Seti for almost 8 months now. It doesn't really get all that hot and i run it just about 24/7. I usually keep the CD ROM drive open partially just so the airflow is a bit better. I'm not actually sure if it will because the CD ROMS are usually in some sort of case but after reading the link to the other conversation i think i might reconsider running it at all. It's about two years old now and maybe i'll cut back. Then again I might make some crazy cooling setup. :) The only problems that i've had though is my connection to the net. if i leave it on then after about three or so hours i have problems communicating with the net. usually a restart fixes the problem but i'm not really sure what's the problem. I just got DSL a month or so ago and i've been having other problems with it too because of the LAN i setup. Anyways, thanx for your help again.

greg, i see that you are in the US according to your stats, if your DSL provided happens to be Bellsouth, i may be able to help you with the problems you are having.

Yeah, BUT!

I don't have a good section on optimized clients. Been too busy with other things, but the good news is that I DO have a section in the FAQ about how to get the most out of BOINC and I "THINK", too much stuff now ... I have one of the optimized client sites there.

The better news is that the NEW FAQ allows YOU to add material including new questions. Follow the DARK blue FAQ icon. The older flat file FAQ are still there for use, though I killed the JavaScript part so it look awful, but I am going to take them out in a couple weeks.

Even better I am looking into giving you the ability to PRINT material in nicer forms. But that is DOWN the road at least a month off ... maybe more ...

Happy reading ...

My ISP is Verizon
Using a Westell 2200? It has a tendency to overheat and shut down without warning... .o0(I know that mine does)
Verizon hasn't given me problems with connections so far.

i work in the DSL tech field, so long as it is not verizon's issue (which i would have no control over) i'd be happy to help you go through your networking and PC settings. we sould probably take that to an external chat or phone if you are interested. let me know.

the westell 2200 is an okay piece of eq, be we only used it for about 6 months, currently sending out the westell 6100. of course, a firmware update is always a good thing to do.

good luck!

Sorry for causing an OT chit-chat...

Westell's firmware update page has down since before I got DSL in Sep..
Out here most users are getting Versalinks for DSL or FIOS (No idea what the modem would be).

NA, i'm sure they can forgive you for OT, you just forgot which forum you were in *smiles* of course, here i go extending it...
but in a way, it is to better help Mindscape crunch more effiently.

wow, well, usually the ISP would have their own firmware, i know that we have disabled some features and enabled quite a few others.
i do have a contact at westell i could try if you think it might work, but i am not positive that he would have immediate access if verizon does use a different firmware (since i see him around here all the time, i guess that he only works their bellsouth contract).
we use other modems as well, but the westell is still the most common one sent out for bellsouth.

Thanx guys, i've got some sort of Versalink. It does like to do the shutting off thing when it does get warm. i guess it was a bad idea to put it in the crawl space in the roof, since i'm in California. I've been meaning to redo my cat5e cable so i can have the modem downstairs. never got around to it yet.

in that case, if it is still within a warranty with Verizon, you can tell them that the modem gets very hot to the touch and shuts off a lot, they should replace it for you as that could be a fire hazard, and is definately providing poor DSL service.
good luck with all of that!

[Edit] It does like to do the shutting
> off thing when it does get warm.

I have a Toshiba Satellite 1955-S803 that was shutting down as you described. Pretty frustrating. Turns out, there was a wad of cyberschmutz clogging the intake grate on the laptop's underbelly. Shook it, applied vacuum cleaner hose to intake grate, added suction liberally while shaking the damn thing, and out popped the schmutz. The Toshiba hasn't cut out on me since, despite 24/7 crunching. Could be it's afraid of me now. :->
I do keep the lid closed so the screen goes off, and I usually run the screen at about medium brightness. I've heard that the screen's the big heat producer in this unit.
Hope that helps.

My screen doesn't seem to get warm at all. I have it at the lowest brightness which is still pretty bright to me. I keep the lid closed whenever i'm not activly using it, it's always pluged in also. I haven't had much trouble with the laptop itself other than the internet connection not working right when i leaave boinc running. If i leave it running while i sleep for instance, when i lift the lid and try to gain access to the net i can't. I usually restart the OS so i can get back on the net. Kind of funky but i really don't have a problem with it. I just think that i could use some RAM so i can cruch faster or whatever. Thanx for all the input guys. :D much appreciated

Actually, I didn't mean to imply that the screen itself gets warm. As I understand it, the power needed to run the screen results in a fair amount of heat being produced in the machine's internals.
