Hey, long time reader, first time poster... Anyway, I started with I know now is the classic seti setup. I moved to a command line form and it I stuck wit that since it ran much faster (more wu=good). Now i'm reading about BOINC and how it's the prefered method of doing this kind of shared crunching. SO my questions are 1) should i stop using the command line version and focus entirely on working with BOINC? 2) Are result computed with the older versions somehow less thorough than using BOINC? thanks |

(more > wu=good). That is for you to decide. I hear that the "Classic Seti" is basically recrunching old work units. Sometimes as many as 9 times on the same WU. This is done to keep WU (work units) available for Classic crunchers with work. "Boinc/seti" is only sending out each unit to 4 crunchers and hopes for at least two results with close to the same result. This means that the Boinc/Seti results are done a fewer number of times. This increases your ability to do more, and more meaningfull work. Recrunching old units does help increase the credit, but does little to nothing for the science. I believe the more useful WU crunched = good. They came up with Boinc so you could keep your processors down cycles busy by crunching for other projects when Seti runs low on Work units. > > SO my questions are 1) should i stop using the command line version and focus > entirely on working with BOINC? Boinc is getting ready to shut down the Classic site, It may not be for months. But they are going to shut it down. Your old credits will show up on this site, but since the work done to get the credit is different your new boinc credit cannot be applied to your old Classic credit. Since, it's ending, you can switch or not switch, but eventually you'll be stopped from doing work for the classic project. 2) Are result computed with the older versions > somehow less thorough than using BOINC? I don't know if Boinc results are any different from Classic in helping to find ET. Maybe someone else can assist here. There are many threads which discuss your concerns, and I'd advise you to look for them as I haven't even covered 5% of what could have been said. Welcome to Boinc/Seti. Remember there are many projects to do work for if you choose. > > thanks > |

Welcome to the wonderful world of Boinc. As mmciastro mentioned, there are several projects for which you can sign up to do work. If you look on the boinc web site you will see a list of the projects that are available. I can't say if this is a comprehensive list, but at least it will get you a good start. There is a lot of stuff to learn about BOINC. Visit the message boards often and keep an eye on the Questions and Problems area, also. In addition, Mr. Paul Buck has put together an FAQ (for lack of a better term) about BOINC. Unfortunately, I don't have the URL for his site. I've never personally been to it, but I hear that it is a superb source of information. I think if you have been running a classic Seti cache setup (like Seti Driver) you will find Boinc Seti almost identical. If you are using dial up you will have to use connect/disconnect from the network under the Boinc application, but it's pretty easy once you get familiar with the (Boinc) menus. And you will be able to continue to crunch Seti WU's in the future as requirements (more complex data analysis) change. It's inevitable that everyone will eventually have to change from Seti Classic t Boinc Seti. <img src='http://www.boincsynergy.com/images/stats/comb-912.jpg'> |

> Here's PAUL And STILL working hard! :) I *AM* making progress, it just sometimes does not look like it ... The good news is that we are collecting data each day and I "touch" at least 20-30 pages a day. I am mostly doing content again so you should see new material showing up in all the pages. I have been capturing Einstein@Home pages, and Just added Lattice placeholders, though I will likely shoot pictures of the parts of the Lattice site that I can get too … Next major update of the files will be Friday (as usual), with another refresh early Monday (If I get a lot done on the weekend). Bugs, when reported, get fixed ASAP ... but only if you tell me about them. Welcome to the adventure! |
