I also had this problem and to compound it all, it locked up BOINC such that I couldn't d/l any NEW WU's from SETI and CPDN.

And their website went down, so nothing could be accessed, nor comments made to their webmaster about the problem.

SO, like the OP, I too had to detach just to clear my PC. God knows how many WU's the scheduler has tried to dl/ to clients machines today - and mostly (I guess) they've all failed..! What a waste!

I manage to get a wu to download using 4.14

Got many error messages while downloading but it downloaded and is currently crunching away.

Yeah, I read the front page. On the upside I'm still receiving SETI units. So this hasn't affected SETI on my machine. On the downside, I'm still getting

--- - 2005-01-17 15:35:50 - Insufficient work; requesting more
ProteinPredictorAtHome - 2005-01-17 15:36:11 - Master file fetch failed

Web page is back up, but attempting to access their forums, the ask a question section, or the contact option all gives a 400 bad request error.

I could try re-setting the project (it isn't like I have any work units or results I could lose now), though am not sure what's up about that error.

On the upside, they are resolving many quirks and some (maybe all) the pending credit did get applied. Until I look in the user page though, I won't know about work units which I downloaded, which disappeared off the user page previously, even upon successful upload of results however.

The last message I saw @Predictor stated that they were expecting download errors as they have removed some input files to save disk space but not yet updated the database to tell it the files are missing. Hence, loads of download errors until the duff units are removed.

would 4.14 solve the problem of multiple failed downloads as stated in the news on the einstein homepage? I am a bit afraid of installing the new boinc however, because some problems with cpdn were reported and I am at over 90% in a cpdn-wu.

It's downloading now...not sure what the master file list failure was attributable to though. It had switched from no schedulers responded to that about 12 hours ago. It's pulling them now. One change I notice is a back off algorithm between file downloads of 1 minute. That's probably to help with some of the probs they were seeing...

If you're at over 90% and there's that potential for a problem, I'd just hold off on the upgrade. When I upgraded to 4.14 I didn't have any probs with the SETI unit, when I restarted BOINC, it started processing right where it left off. However peeps had probs with CDPN and this, better safe then sorry I guess, with 90% of a CPDN WU.

I see no improvement in downloading with 4.14, so I'd hold off

Well, if the download-files is physically missing from the server, a client-update wouldn't change anything. ;)

You can still find the 4.14 version here but it's still considered alpha code.

Without my direct knowledge, my office computer started downloading a bunch (two full screens worth) of WU from Predictor sometime earlier today. I noticed it 20 minutes ago when I got back on. All of them seem to be downloading just fine (so Far). Curious thing is that the website is down. I'll let you know how things come out. I'm on Dial UP so this looks like it'll take till 10 or 11 PM Eastern standard time (US) (UTC-5)

Well, about 10 pm EST, It stopped downloading with about a page left to go. Website is also down at this time. I did manage to get a total of 3 WU, one is paused, two are ready to run.

About an hour ago (9PM EST), I had about a dozen WU's start downloading and fail. There were some 3MB parts all the way down to 3 Bytes. All errored out.

Well, I looked at the Messages, and it looks like predictor started downloading my files from 10:35 and stopped at 10:52, then just now started again.

to encapsulate this:
Predictor started downloads (17 WU's) this afternoon, I didn't know it. I signed off mydial up ISP. When I came back I noticed the transfer screen with all the pretty WU (Retry download in ??:??:??? messages). I signed on and began the downloads. Downloading stopped entirely many times. Leaving the progress indicators on atleast 6 of the parts at some number 45.75% for example. It's taken till now, but everyone downloaded without one "Download Error" message.

I'm using Boinc V4.14. Do you think that had anything to do with it??? Normally, if I sign off and then back on I get Client download errors. Any Ideas?

Good nite all
