XP pro SP2 Pent 4 2.4 Ive noticed the following stats in "my Computer" Hard disc C 18.6 gb used 16.1gb Hard disc d 58.4 gb used 67m I run seti and climate predictor plus 3 games for variety and would like to get into LHC when it comes up. Knowing VERY little about computers my question is: when C is full do my activities automatically "spill" over to D and I just continue on not knowing anything has happened? also (whilst someone is prepared to help?) my comp is on 24/7 (home) doing seti/cp should I have it "serviced" in any way at my local comp shop? (grease and oil change etc??) Appreciate any advice, Thanks John Hope there is more intelligence out there than here |

First run System Clean up Start, accessories, system tools, disk cleanup Second, Defrag your hard disk. How much disk space do you have after cleanup? If there is not enough Disk space on HD Boinc stops Cleaning of Computer: Good Idea once in a while. I typically use canned air $. Shut down puter Unplug remove side panel. Be careful. Blow out Dust dog hair etc check you fans blow them out to. once done make sure all cards ram sticks are firmly seated. I f your are static prone always touch system frame after unplug to make sure to discharge. Just what I do I can't afford to take to a Shop. I am sure others have different opinions this what I do and never had any problems.... Timmy |

Grease and oil change, of course, no :)))) But you shall visit (together with your computer) your local comp shop for servicing the fans, heatsinks, optical drives, etc (the air is full of dust). Id recommend you to clear your Temporary Internet Files, Temporary files and the obsolete old restore points from your C drive to free some space (2 GB free space are near the lower watermark). Also is good idea to defragment the hardrive once or twice per month. |

Generally you will have to determine which drive is used for what, in most cases the OS will not do it for you. The OS is normally installed on drive C:. This means your swap file is also normally on drive C:. Windows seems to run better if there is plenty of space available for the swap file. I don't like seeing that drive more than 50% full, but that is an opinion not a fact. I recommend that you move all video, pics, and music files to your D: drive. I also would most likely recommend that you move BOINC to the D: drive (I'd have to dig around and see how that drive is connected to be sure). To move BOINC you would need to uninstall, move the data that is left and then reinstall to the new location. Sevicing can be done by you. Run virus scanners from time to time, once a week minimum. Get some canned air and blow out the inside of the case ocasionally, yearly is enough for most systems. Be careful to keep the can upright, if it puts out liquid it can damage your computer. BOINC WIKI BOINCing since 2002/12/8 |

Thank you all for advice. I just a minute ago did a "cleanup" but it wont let me defrag Have 13% free need 15%. Looks as though I will have to delete something- One thought could I delete one of the games (eg Myst and/or trainz) and Install on D is that possible ? Also check the settings for the System Recovery Agent. Its in the "System Restore" tab in System Properties. (Right click "My Computer and click "Properties). Click the Settings button for System Restore and move the %used to something reasonable. Its probably using a lot of the space on your drive for older restore points that won't actually do anything. Run the disk cleanup tool afterwards, might pick up some more files to delete. As for where to put your games - yes, put all that stuff on your D: drive. Actually makes more sense to leave Windows on C: and install everything else on D:. |

John, since you have so much space on your D drive, I would personally install any games onto that drive. You just have to be careful when they're installing - if you just take the default options, almost all games will automatically install on the C drive. You have to change that yourself to the D drive. |

> Also is good idea to defragment the hardrive once or twice per month. Unless you're running lots of database queries, updates, insertions etc, or creating & deleting lots of small files regularly then at least 6 months between defrags is a more reasonable time frame. Grant Darwin NT |

And, of course, web pages are full of small files. This reminds me that it isn't a good idea to defragment the harddrive whilst SETI is running |

Many thanks,I appear to have uninstall/instal one of the games from C to D successfully which has changed my C free space from 13% to 50%(not bad for an idiot !!). defragged ok (suspended boinc). Cheers and tks again John Hope there is more intelligence out there than here |

> I suppose he runs SETI and constantly downloads and uploads results. Yep, but the fragmentation that results is bugger all. > And, of course, web pages are full of small files. Better to delete those before defragmenting- speeds things up enormously. Grant Darwin NT |
