Message 69707 - Posted: 15 Jan 2005, 17:28:59 UTC

I am working on error messages in the new FAQ database and I have gone through all my on-hand logs and have captured all of the messsages that I can find.

I know I am missing some. SO, I am asking if anyone has log files with the messages in them that I can scan.

Alternatively, you can look in the database to see which ones I have already ...

If you have log files, I sure could use them now.

Thanks!

are you referring to STDERR and STDOUT? I've looked at mine and have no exotic error messages

Well, I have looked at mine too ... and I also have no interesting error messages, at least not yet at any rate ...

Heck, I can't even find any examples of the famous -9 message ... ah well ...

NEXT contestant!

Paul, you're a few steps above my ability. I didn't/don't know what you're asking for, but I'm willing to try.

are you asking about error message located in STDERR and/or STDOUT? Or maybe some other log

You can find them IN those logs, if you keep them...

The simpler way is to just look on the messages tab of the BOINC Manager ... </shameless-plug>see my book </shameless-plug> ... on how to copy them to a text file ...

Good exercise here ... let us see if my BOINC Owner's Manual is up to the task!

Seriously, if it isn't, this is a good way to find out! So, as he said, "an experimental weapon with experimental ammunition ... so lets expiriment!"

Fred,

If that link worked for me that might be cool. But if it is the file I think it is, it does not tell you much of anything. Worse, it is incomplete in that, apparantly, the early design called for a central message system. Some where along the line that appears to have disappeared and was replaced with code that spews out messages where ever they feel like it.

The side effect of that appears to be slightly different spellings/wording of the messages across the platforms. When the cross-platform version comes out I can take another whack at looking at the code. But at the moment, I am not going to hold my breath ...

mm ...

Thanks, I got at least 5 I don't think I saw before ...

Thanks Ingleside ...

I did not have a couple of those ...

And, yes, -9 is not an error, it is informational/warning type. And yes I have 4 message types ... Information, status, warning, error ...

But, most new users don't know that it is not an error ... and we are constantly telling people about it ...

But, I need to add it to the FAQ database so that it is there and I don't get irate customers telling me that I missed one ... :)

Keep them comming folks ...

I had this when ProPredictor failed this morning:

--- - 2005-01-17 09:53:15 - FILE_INFO::~FILE_INFO(): removing FILE_INFO when a pers_file_xfer still points to me

An embarrassment of riches ... :)

I got a little behind this day as one of my machines decided to die ...

The good news is that this machine had been intermittant and so off to Frys to use the no hassel, it is THEIR problem warrenty ... This was especially gratifying as whatever when wrong melted the little 4 prong plug for the CPU power ...

Even better, they were out of stock on that type MB so I got a better one in exchange ... cost me 6 plus hours ... but it looks like I may be back up and going!

The real depresssing thing was that I was without MUSIC! Oh well, it looks like all is better now ...

Oh, by-the-way, thanks for these last messages, I keep finding new ones on my own too ...

Heck, I seem to be finding them faster than I can document them ...

But, all-in-all, we are making slow progress ... I fixed several errors in the php code added some new text and straightened out some other problems ...

Hopefully tomorrow will be better ...

Even better, the fixed computer could not start SETI@Home, so I got a couple more new messages ...

This is the TYPE of thing I am looking for. What I want is the messge, exactly as it appears in either the log files, or off of the messages tab so I can add the message to the DB driven FAQ so others can see them and get an idea of what they mean and what to do about them.

To see the samples, go to the FAQ and then look in the BOINC Messages part and see the 50+ messages there and that will show you exactly what I mean.

Be advised that there *ARE* a couple bugs in the FAQ engine right now, but the developer of phpMyFAQ has fixes prepared and that realease is scheduled to happen this month (I brokened it ...)

For example, though this will appear in the SETI Section is the followning:

SETI@Home Informational message -9 result_overflow
NOTE: The number of results detected exceeds the storage space allocated.

In the BOINC section the messages are like:

ProteinPredictorAtHome - 2005-01-16 08:47:52 - Scheduler RPC to http://predictor1.scripps.edu/predictor_cgi/cgi succeeded
ProteinPredictorAtHome - 2005-01-16 08:47:52 - Message from server: No work available
ProteinPredictorAtHome - 2005-01-16 08:47:52 - No work from project
ProteinPredictorAtHome - 2005-01-16 08:47:52 - Deferring communication with project for 1 hours, 0 minutes, and 0 seconds

So do you have the exact message? Or is it gone?

Instructions to opy the message are in the BOINC Owner's Manual in the Message Tab section.

NovaPaul,

That is all anyone can ask ... I actually have another 20 or so I have to try to get into the database (with luck, today?) ...
