A little answer:

When a new thread is created, its creation timestamp is inserted into the database using mysql's built in UNIXTIMESTMP() function which uses the current UNIX time stamp on the database server. When the thread is displayed, the webserver compares this timestamp to its own UNIX timestamp to determine how long ago the thread was posted to. Since the database server and the webserver are not the same machine, I suspect the database server's clock is about a second ahead of the webserver's.

Although ESP and time travel are also a fully valid explanations.

Sorry if I spoiled the fun but I'm bored waiting for my stats server in Norway to be rebooted so I had to get some "looking at code time" in :)
