Hi all

I would like to crunch units on my computer at work however I keep getting erors connecting to the project and I suspect that its the corporate firewall telling me to b*&&!r off.

Does anybody know a way of getting WU's onto this PC. Can they be transferred from another computer in any way? Any other sneaky or clever ways to do it.

Hi Neil

Check first if your company is using a a proxy.
If yes, you need to configure the Boinc client accordingly.

I had problems too attaching more hosts to my existing account.

I tried the proxy option just in case but still couldnt get any further. Our local network admin thinks it probably is a firewall issue which he has no control over (especially as this is not exactly a work related issue).

I was hoping I could maybe connect my laptop to the company LAN and then transfer WU's to my PC.

Possible that the firewall is filtering this kind of traffic, but it seems a bit odd.

The only thing you could try is to copy some WU's over. It worked with S@H classic...
However hearing that the WU's are signed this could be a problem. The only way is to try and see. :-)

Are you using the windows client?

Check the folder \boinc\projects
There you will find the WU's.

Even if they are finished I wonder if you will have the chance to upload them with the firewall in place... would be interesting.

I know what you mean about the firewall being a bit odd however our network guys have had their fingers burnt a few times over the last 6 months or so. I think they've probably decided to stop just about anything being downloaded in an attempt to prevent virus entry.

Just moving the work units over will definately not work. The only thing that might work would be to let the laptop register a second host, by putting the executable in a separate directory and starting it, letting it get a new host id and create its own set of files - then zipping up that entire directory and moving it to the other system, unzipping it and running it, then zipping it back up and moving it back to the laptop to be turned back in.

But, I still wouldn't hold out a lot of hope for this working either, especially if the laptop and the corporate system are not virtually identical. And some things in the various xml files may have to be edited to conceal the identity of the computer that really did the work.

And lastly, even it boinc accepts it, you may be turning in stuff with really off-the-wall point requests - which may screw not only you, but the other 2 people who did the work unit also.
